Fun fact: There's a go-kart racing game involving all the popular Dreamworks movies circa 2013 and one of the characters you can play as is Toothless...even though the game cover art has both of his natural tail fins intact and thus he could like...cheat by flying his way to victory.

I ended up writing a fic about it. Just as well, the actual game doesn't have a story mode, or least, the 3DS version doesn't. *shrugs*

If you ever ask Hiccup about the incident, he’ll say that he still has no idea how he and Toothless ended up on a racing track in an alternate dimension. One that is full of weird creatures who also have no idea how they got there.

One where it gave him his leg and Toothless’ tail back while they were there. It was strange having two feet made of flesh and blood again.

But watching Toothless excitedly fly around unassisted seemed to make whole thing look less surreal and more like the best dream ever.

…Until a Whispering Death showed up on one of those weird metal contraptions the talking Donkey relayed from the lion named Alex, who had attempted to welcome the dragon and his rider when they had first arrived, were called 'go-karts’. Up until that point Toothless hung back in the sidelines to watch Hiccup try to figure out how to drive in the testing track.

“What’s wrong bud?” Hiccup asked when the growling started.

The growling got louder and the boy looked in the Night Fury’s general direction to find a dragon that resembled a giant spikier mace in a go kart. It seemed to sneer at Toothless with smugness as it climbed out of its go kart that was painted gold.

“I guess the champion wanted to check out the competition,” said Donkey. The penguins surrounding him nodded.

The animals and Hiccup watched as the dragons exchanged a series of circling, growls, roars, barks, flapping wings, and eventually, fireballs. Toothless dodged the other dragon’s fire and released his own fireball that missed the Whispering Death’s head by mere inches.

With a shriek, the Whispering Death smacked Toothless on the back with his spike ready tail.

“Toothless!” Hiccup ran towards his friend in concern and had to dodge several racers who tried to grab him and hold him back from the fight.

The dragons froze as they acknowledged Hiccup’s presence. The Whispering Death looked at Toothless, then Hiccup, and then Toothless again before making an odd noise which Hiccup realized was laughter. It raised its spiked tail and the next thing the boy knew, he was on the ground several feet away pinned under Alex. The lion let go of him and gave him a concerned look.

“Yeah, I’m okay,” said Hiccup as he sat up to look for Toothless.

His dragon had a scared look on his face that gave away to relief and then to rage as he turned back to his opponent, whose tail raised up from the ground where Hiccup once stood before being saved by a lion. With a war cry, the Night Fury tackled the Whispering Death and the two got into a wrestling match with claws and fangs digging into scales.

Hiccup watched on helplessly as the two fought. What could he do? He’s not strong enough to pry two angry dragons off each other and even if he could, all it would result in losing more of his remaining limbs if he was lucky.

And then suddenly the ground shook and the sky thundered as…a giant woman with white hair ran to the scene and pried the now surprised dragons from their holds on their opponent.

“You know the rules!” She shouted, not caring that everyone in proximity flinched at the loud sound, “No fighting!”

She set both dragons onto the ground and released them from her fists.

“Toothless! Are you alright?” Hiccup ran to the Night Fury who was growling at the Whispering Death who sulkily climbed back into its go-kart. The dragon roared a challenge towards Toothless who, while ignoring the one-legged viking checking him for injures, answered back with his acceptance. The Whispering Death drove off to lick its wounds.

“Have we met?” asked the woman, voice now lowered to a tolerable level.

Hiccup shook his head, “No, we just got here. I’m Hiccup and that’s Toothless.”

“I’m Susan,” she glanced worriedly at Toothless who continued to sulk, “why was he fighting the Champion?”

“Champion?”

“The Go-Kart Racing Champion of…wherever we are,” replied Susan.

Great, not even a Giant knows where they are. Hiccup sighed.

“How do we get out of here?” he asked.

One of the penguins squawked. “Only one guy managed to get out of here and we’re still not sure how he did it,” Donkey relayed as he cautiously walked up to the Giant, the boy, and the dragon, “now why did your dragon decided it was a good idea to accept a challenge from the Champion?”

Toothless grumbled an answer. Donkey tilted his head in confusion, “What do you mean he insulted your pride as a dragon? That’s not-” Toothless shot him a warning glare and Donkey backed away, “okay fine, its a perfectly good reason.”

“You can understand him?” Hiccup was awestruck.

“Of course I can! Can’t you?” Hiccup shook his head.

“Does he know how to drive?” Susan interrupted. The smaller figures below clamored a 'no.’

“Then he’s going to have to learn to drive a go-kart if he has any chance of beating the Champion.”

“Why can’t they just have a race where they fly?” asked Hiccup.

“Its against the rules. We can only race with those karts,” Susan eyed a dumbstruck Toothless, “Sorry but its true.”

The dragon stared at the go kart, then twisted around to look at his tail, then at Donkey, then at Hiccup, and then at the go kart again. The pupils in his eyes became slits and hissed at Hiccup.

“He wants you to build him one,” Donkey translated.

“Oh. Alright, Toothless, let’s go make one,” Hiccup shrugged as Alex roared and indicated to follow him to a nearby building.

Toothless followed with determination. He will show his old rival that he can win without a human on his back. He will not take this challenge lightly. If he loses, it would leave a black mark of dishonor on his kind and on the inhabitants of Berk. It would mean that he’s not worthy of being called a leader.

He will make Hiccup proud.
